Western Green Erosion Control Blankets & TRMs

The full Western Green line of erosion control blankets and turf reinforcement mats — from temporary straw ECBs to permanent high-performance TRMs for slopes, swales, and channels.

Western Green Excel erosion control blankets protect bare soil on slopes, swales, and channels while vegetation establishes — with biodegradable, photodegradable, and long-term permanent options for every job. Choose a temporary straw ECB for quick cover, a straw/coconut or coconut blanket for extended term, or a turf reinforcement mat (TRM) for permanent, high-flow protection. Every Western Green product on this page ships free.

What It Is

What Is an Erosion Control Blanket?

An erosion control blanket (ECB) is a biodegradable or synthetic mat rolled over bare soil to shield it from rain and runoff while seed germinates and vegetation takes hold. It holds soil and seed in place on slopes, lines swales and channels against washout, and breaks down or stays permanent depending on how long the site needs protection.

Western Green's Excel line covers the full range: temporary straw blankets for short-term cover, straw/coconut and coconut blankets for extended and long-term projects, and turf reinforcement mats (TRMs) for permanent, high-flow reinforcement where vegetation alone can't hold.

Choose by Longevity

Match the Blanket to the Job

Erosion control blankets are grouped by how long they last. Pick the class that matches how quickly your vegetation will establish and how aggressive the site conditions are.

Material Types

Straw, Coconut & Turf Reinforcement

Temporary

Straw Blankets

100% weed-free agricultural straw, stitch-bonded to single or double netting. The economical choice for short-term erosion control while turf establishes on gentle to moderate slopes.

Extended / Long term

Straw/Coconut & Coconut

Blending coconut (coir) fiber in — 30% in the CS-3, 100% in the CC-4 — extends functional life for steeper slopes, higher rainfall, and slower-to-establish vegetation.

Permanent

Turf Reinforcement Mats

UV-stabilized synthetic matrices (PP5 and ECP/ECC/ECSC series) that stay in place permanently, reinforcing roots so established turf withstands high flows in channels and on steep slopes.

High performance

HP-TRMs

PP5-Pro and PP5-Xtreme are woven high-denier monofilament HP-TRMs for the most demanding channels — maximum shear strength where standard TRMs aren't enough.

Where It's Used

Slopes, Swales & Channels

Slopes & embankments

Hold soil and seed on graded slopes until vegetation roots and stabilizes the surface.

Swales & ditches

Line drainage swales to resist channelized flow and prevent washout during storms.

Channels & waterways

Use TRMs where concentrated flow demands permanent reinforcement beyond vegetation alone.

Site restoration

Re-establish vegetation on disturbed ground, roadsides, and construction sites.

Questions

Erosion Control Blanket FAQ

What is the difference between an erosion control blanket and a turf reinforcement mat?

An erosion control blanket (ECB) is temporary — it protects soil and seed while vegetation establishes, then biodegrades. A turf reinforcement mat (TRM) is permanent — it stays in the soil and reinforces the root system so established turf can withstand high flows in channels and on steep slopes.

Which erosion control blanket do I need?

Match it to how long you need protection and how harsh the site is. Straw blankets (SR-1, SS-2) suit short-term cover on gentle to moderate slopes; straw/coconut (CS-3) and coconut (CC-4) blankets last longer for steeper slopes and slower vegetation; TRMs (PP5, ECP/ECC/ECSC series) are for permanent, high-flow reinforcement. The longevity table above lays out each class.

What is the difference between single-net and double-net blankets?

A single-net blanket has netting on one side (SR-1); a double-net blanket sandwiches the fiber matrix between two nets (SS-2), adding strength and durability for steeper slopes and longer functional life.

What are the "All Natural" (AN) and "Rapid Go" versions?

All Natural (AN) versions use 100% biodegradable netting, ideal for environmentally sensitive sites where synthetic netting isn't wanted. Rapid Go adds faster-degrading netting for quicker breakdown after vegetation establishes.

How are Western Green blankets installed?

Blankets roll out over prepared, seeded soil, are anchored with staples or stakes per the manufacturer's pattern, and overlap at seams so runoff can't get underneath. Steeper slopes and channels need tighter anchor spacing. Follow Western Green's installation guidance for your product and slope.
