The Benefits Found in HDPE Plastic

High-Density Polyethylene or HDPE has grown in popularity. Polyethylene is a common plastic that is used for plastic bags, films, and containers. HDPE is a thermoplastic that offers many benefits such as resistance to chemicals and rigid strength. Even though it's a member of the polyethylene family, HDPE has a molecular density that is much higher than polyethylene where HDPE gets its unique mechanical properties.

In this article, we will go over the benefits of HDPE and the industries that use this amazing polymer.

The Leading Advantages Of Using HDPE

HDPE is resistant to chemicals and corrosion and perfect for storage containers for food, liquids, and chemicals in a range of pH levels. HDPE will remain safe and effective even when in contact with chemicals.

    HDPE Is Certified Food Grade

Many consumers prefer HDPE containers for food storage because they are FDA-approved and meet the standards to keep food safe. After use, the containers are very easy to clean. In the food environment, HDPE is the perfect choice.

    Long-Lasting And Lightweight

The density of HDPE is between 941 kg/m3 to 965 kg/m3 depending on its makeup. Although aluminum is considered very light, its density of 2699 kg/m3 is 2.8 times heavier than HDPE. For many uses where weight is an issue, the lighter weight of high-density polyethylene is a huge advantage.

    UV-Resistant

Resistance to UV rays is essential for a longer lifespan for furniture, parts, or components that are for outside use. Unlike other plastics, HDPE is UV resistant and is perfect for outside items such as playground equipment made from HDPE. This is because HDPE contains UV stabilizers mixed with its resin.

    HDPE Is Machinable And Weldable

HDPE can be easily welded or machined. These enduring and dependable welds make it much easier to design much larger items including watertight tank liners used for storing large volumes of water and other liquids.

    Will Not Absorb Moisture

Zero absorption of moisture is very important for materials used in liquid and food storage. HDPE is the perfect choice when creating storage tanks or other products for outside use as it will not absorb moisture when in contact with liquids for a long period of time.

    The Best Uses For HDPE

HDPE For Medical And Pharmaceutical Use

HDPE or High-density polyethylene is the chosen product for the medical field and will not absorb moisture while remaining chemical resistant. Nontoxic and food-grade HDPE is ideal for working surfaces or storage units like medical containers. Some of the designs contain plastic additives with antibacterial elements.

    HDPE And Chemicals

Because HDPE is a high-chemical resistant product that can be welded. It's the chosen material for designing bottles, containers, and tanks for chemical products. Also, High-density polyethylene is used to create corrosion-resistant liners and is compatible with many other products including -

    • Some concentrated acids (pH 1–3)
    • Low-concentrated acids
    • Some alcohols
    • Bases and alkalis (pH 11–14)

    In Construction

As it's not water-absorbent and can be easily welded, HDPE is very popular among pipe manufacturers. Due to its excellent properties, HDPE is the perfect material for designing lightweight, rigid, and durable piping systems.

    For Maritime Use

HDPE is also used in the maritime industry. As an example, Seaboard™ is a creation of HDPE used to design boat components and, pool equipment including seats, benches, doors, etc. As mentioned earlier, HDPE is also a superior resistance against UV rays.
